2023-12-28 Lahaina Executive Airport looking at Lahaina. We took a trip up to the small airport above Lahaina and got drizzled on. From the airport we could look down at Lahaina and see long stretches of open ground where the town used to be. Even though I felt constantly surrounded by amazing beauty during this trip, the sense of loss hung in the air. Understandably Front Street and the Historic District was closed to traffic and locals were offended by the idea of gawkers taking selfies where their friends lost everything and many died. I look forward to coming back some day and seeing what gets built in honor of what was lost.

2023-12-28 Napili-Honokowai ‘Alaeloa beach. One of the great things about traveling with locals is finding little hidden places that I would have never found on my own. Thus we drove into a residential neighborhood, parked in a cul-de-sac and hidden in the foliage was a path to the beach. We spent some time on the rocks while Aukai searched for crabs. We only found the hollow husk of an unoccupied crab body. Then it was time to walk back through the hidden path to our car. Makes me smile thinking about the adventure.
