2023-12-23 4:49PM HST. We reached the top. Well, we drove to the top and then took a short walk up a trail to a small structure called The House of the Sun that was closed for renovations. We were across the valley from the actual observatory structures, which were not open for public tours. I learned later that they do have occasional star parties, but we weren’t staying for that.
The view was spectacular with the large island of Hawaii poking through the clouds on one end and the waters off West Maui off in the other direction. Some images of the water below the clouds came out better than they appeared to me in the moment. It was a fun afternoon walking above the clouds. Enjoy.
