2023-12-19. How is it that someone ends up going to Costco twice in the same Hawaiian vacation? I’m guessing it’s just a holiday with family kind of a thing. No worries. I much prefer participating in “normal life” when visiting than tourist crap. Thus, eating has been a joy since landing, beginning with an impromptu “Enchiladas special” at a bar that we resorted to because the business we needed to visit was closed for lunch. And meals at home have been wonderful. But one of the best things about this more low key traveling has been eating at local places that I would have never stumbled upon on my own.

I mentioned this place before, but I didn’t give it proper recognition. Dollie’s Pub & Cafe served some amazing pizza and sides and where I found my IPA beer for the trip (Maui Brewing’s Big Swell IPA). We went on a Wednesday evening and the place was packed, which is generally a good sign. The five of us crowded around a table in a nook near the bar, with memorabilia on the wall and plenty of TVs showing assorted games and sports (there was a competitive surfing event happening in the area). I hope we have a chance to go back some other time during the trip.

The second place that we visited was part of the second errand with my sister, Joyce, which is why I’m talking about favorite places to begin with. Sam Sato’s is a family run Japanese noodles place tucked away in an industrial park area with folks waiting in the patio outside to be seated in their small dining area. Only opened from 7am to 2pm, it was a joy of flavor. We had small dry noodles, medium soup and beef BBQ sticks. Joyce said that there are so many carbs in their food that it wouldn’t be good to eat here every day, but I could imagine it. So good.
